PRE-INSTALLATION JOB SETUP
1) Obtain necessary building permits
- to be certain the job meets local building codes
- to avoid fines for homeowner
- to avoid unnecessary cost of corrective construction
2) Assist in obtaining local homeowners’ association approval
- to get color and material approval for subdivision
3) Schedule the job with the homeowner
- to allow homeowner to plan for the work to began
4) Confirm proper materials delivered
- to be certain that the materials are the ones which were ordered
- to make sure job can start on time
- to verify that materials are not damaged
- to verify that the color code is identical on all shingle packages
INSTALLATION
1) Place drop cloths on ground under eaves and protect any vulnerable areas, including AC unit
- to catch falling debris and to protect property from damage
2) If swimming pool close to house, cover with plastic
- to prevent asphalt from entering pumps
3) Remove old roof
- to allow for inspection and repair to the roofing deck and flashing
4) Remove loose nails and debris
- to give smooth surface for new roof
5) Install drip-edge eave flashing
- to protect fascia and trim boards
6) Install #30 felt underlayment with "tin caps"
- to provide proper surface for singles and to provide secondary leak protection in case of shingle blow-offs (use tin caps to help keep felt in place)
7) Install 20" galvanized metal valleys
- to protect against water infiltration in one of the most vulnerable areas
8) Install new Houston Code large lead jacks or galvanized vent flashings & paint jacks same color as roof
- to protect vent pipes from water infiltration
- (use galvanized jacks when there is a squirrel problem)
9) Raise height of PVC pipes when cut too low .
- to allow for proper installation of vent flashings
10) Install new "Class A" painted steel roofing jacks
- to cover stove and dryer vents
11) Install "double insulated" pipes and jacks on gas furnaces and hot water heaters—paint same color as roof.
- to meet code requirements and prevent fire hazard
12) Re-flash skylights
13) Install 3-tab starter course
- fills in spaces under cutouts and edges of the first row of shingles
14) Install shingles using (4), 1 1/4" nails per shingle--install nails along "nail line" for laminated shingles
- to follow manufacturer's specifications and to prevent shingle de-lamination
- (NOTE: on roofs with a pitch > or = 8:12, use 5 nails per shingle; on a pitch >or =18:12, and/or in high wind areas, use 6 nails per shingle)
15) Install Algae Resistant shingles when using laminated shingles
- to prevent dark algae/fungus stains from discoloring shingles
16) Install FHA minimum ventilation system
- to provide proper ventilation and meet the minimum ventilation requirements
17) Install 3-tab hip and ridge shingles (or optional larger special hip and ridge shingles)
- to provide finishing touch to protect roof
- (NOTE: use 1 ¾" roofing nails on "special hip and ridge shingles" for greater holding power)
18) Daily clean up and storage of materials
- to avoid potential dangers of construction site and maintain looks of house
UPON COMPLETION
1) Remove all debris from roof
- for safety and for appearance of the roof
2) Final rooftop inspection
- confirms roof properly installed
3) Final site clean up
- ensures no litter or equipment is left on job site
4) Magnetic sweep
- to ensure no nails in driveway or yard
5) Homeowner's inspection
- to make sure that homeowner is satisfied
6) Mail shingle warranties and release of lien
- to ensure proper future coverage
- to release any potential liens on property
ADDITIONAL RE-DECKING SPECIFICATIONS
1) Place contractors plastic in attic covering AC unit and items in storage
- to protect from falling cedar shingles and dust

2) Move 1" x "4 spaced sheathing to fit horizontally under new decking
- to provide horizontal stability for new decking
3) Use chalk lines for nailing decking
- to ensure proper nailing along rafters
4) Use 2 3/8" ring shank nails to install decking
- to provide maximum holding power
